Photoshop CC: Live Shapes (Live Rectangles and Rounded Rectangles)

Live Shapes are all the rage these days. “Live” in this case, primarily means the ability to easily change corner radius and potentially shapes. In Photoshop, working with vector shapes have always been kind of awkward. It’s a forced evolution from Paths to Vector Masks to Shape layers, and it’s a bit of a stretch. The whole thing with live shapes seems to be that it can easily be translated to CSS.

Just like Illustrator, Live Shapes really places emphasis on Rectangles and Rounded Rectangles (really there is no difference anymore). In Photoshop, Live Shapes Properties are displayed in the Properties Panel when a shape is selected. A few things to note

  • There is basically no difference between rectangle and rounded rectangle
  • Ovals don’t get radius options (duh) but you still get to set stroke options
  • Polygon, line and custom shapes don’t have any options at all. They are NOT smart.

Hi, when I draw a rectangle and want to modify the radius with the properties panel, I only have the one you show for Polygon, Line and Custom. How can I have the full properties? thx

It shouldn’t behave that way. In the properties panel, Polygons, lines, and custom only shows the mask properties. For rectangles, it can display both mask properties and Live Shape Properties. It’s the two icons on the very top row. double check to see maybe you have the mask (the square with the circle inside of it) selected instead of the live shape properties selected.

thank you for your reply. The issue is that when I select my rectangle and open the porperties, I only have the mask’s properties (the 3rd picture in your example). I don’t have the possibility to select Live Shape at all. I don’t know if it is a bug or I am doing something wrong
