Illustrator: Touch Type Tool

Illustrator CC introduces the Touch Type Tool, a fabulous new way of interacting with type in your illustrator file. Now, rather than messing with the numbers in the character panel, you can intuitively drag to manipulate the type and change it’s scaling, rotation, and position.

  • Touch Type tool (Shift+T) from the Type tool, or enable [show touch type tool] from the Character panel flyout menu
  • Drag a corner to manipulate the type

Working with the Touch Type Tool

Clicking and dragging one of the corners allow you to manipulate the type visually. It’s important to remember that all of these controls still correspond to one of the settings in the character panel. There is nothing new here, but it is much more intuitive visually and much more interactive.

  • Free rotate: Corresponds to the rotate setting in the character panel
  • Vertical Scale: Corresponds to the vertical scale setting in the character panel
  • Horizontal Scale: Corresponds to the horizontal scale setting in the character panel
  • Free Move: Correspnds to the Baseline Shift (vertical movement) and the kerning (horizontal movement) settings in the character panel. You can also drag within the bounding box for the Touch Type Tool to use the Free Move.
  • Proportional Scale: Corresponds to the horizontal and vertical scale setting in the character panel.

The only complaint that that i can have is that the Touch Type tool can only ‘touch’ one character at a time, but it’s loads of fun!
