Illustrator CC: Automatic Corner Generation

Screen Shot 2014-06-02 at 10.55.54 AMIllustrator CC (not sure how to refer to different versions of CC…) now has the ability to automatically generate corners when you create a pattern brush, which previously required a lot of effort and trial and error.

  • Create a pattern and drag it into the brushes panel and choose Pattern Brush.
  • Instead of picking a corner tile, Illustrator will offer the option of  Show Auto Generated Corner Tile. This is what we want
  • Voila! No more meticulously crafting a corner tile for a pattern brush!

There are 4 different methods for the auto generated tiles. It’s not really necessary to know how they work since there’ll be a thumbnail to show you what it looks like, but here’s a breakdown:

  • Auto-Centered: Side tile stretched around corner and centered on corner
  • Auto-Between: Copies the side tile, extend all the way into the corner, with one copy on each side. Folding emulation is used to stretch the shape into the corner
  • Auto-Sliced: Side tile is sliced diagonally, and the pieces come together like a miter joint
  • Auto-Overlap: The tile is copied and overlapped at the corner.

To better show this, I used a basic text sample as the pattern. If you are using regular patterns, some of the methods may generate similar looking results.

Illustrator obviously generates these patterns from the existing artwork, which might limit your options if you want to generate something really fancy for the corner, but keep in mind that once the brush is generated, you can pull the brush out from the brushes panel and access the vector pieces of the auto generated corner to play with as well!
