Photoshop: LUT Color Adjustments (Color Lookup Tables)

When saving to images like PNG8 or Gifs, which have a limited color range, a Color Lookup Table (LUT) is used to map the are used to index the colors that will be used in the image. The Color Reduction Algorithm determines which colors make it into the final look up table. The Dithering Method determines how the algorithm mixes existing colors in the file to create the illusion of more colors.

  • Perceptual: Gives priority to colors to which human eyes are more sensitive.
  • Selective: Like Perceptual, but also preserves web safe colors. This is the best one. it’s the default.
  • Adaptive: Custom LUT based on the image.
  • Restrictive: Uses the web-safe 216 colors
