Photoshop Blend Mode Neutral Colors

Here is a picture of all of Photoshop’s Blend Modes with their neutral colors. You can also see them in the New Layer Dialog Box in Photoshop.

Blend modes allow a layer in photoshop to interact with a layer below it to create a new effect. Most blend modes have a neutral color — a color which passes through and does not interact with the layers below.

  • If a blend mode has a neutral color, it comes in either Black, White, or Neutral Gray (128,128,128).
  • If a neutral color is white, the blend mode will usually darken the layer below (anything darker than white will interact with the below layer)
  • If a neutral color is black, the blend mode will usually lighten the layer below (anything lighter than black will interact with the layer below)
  • If a neutral color is Gray, anything darker than gray will darken, and anything lighter than gray will lighten.
