Digital Publishing: Optimizing Interactive Overlays

When creating a digital publication, the static portions of the layout gets flattened as an image. The interactive elements, however, are either resampled, or simply passed through to the final output.

Resampled Overlays

  • Buttons
  • Slideshows
  • Scrollable Frames
  • Audio Skins

Pass-through Overlays

  • Video
  • Image Sequence
  • Panorama
  • Pan/Zoom

It’s worth noting that, for the pass-through overlays, InDesign simply passes the original assets into the final publication, so optimizing the files for size/quality is up to us!. In general, design the overlay for your target device resolution. For iPad, design at 72 dpi. For Retina iPad, design at 144 dpi.
