Photoshop Action within an Action

Did you know you can have a Photoshop Action run another Photoshop Action? It’s like nested actions, and can let you divide smaller chunks of command sequences into its own action to be called out by other actions.

When recording an action, you can click to play another action, and Photoshop will record the action as “Play Action”.

You can also assign a keyboard shortcut to play the action while recording.

    Love your site.
You can also do this while recording an action – when you get to the spot where you want to include an action, just click on that action and play it. Just got to be careful — this actually DOES play the action on whatever file/s you have open.

Just tried it. It totally works. Earlier in the day when I was trying the same thing it seemed to click away from the action and wouldn’t record. I’ll revise the post

WHEN IT DOESN’T SEEM TO WORK CORRECTLY – If the action will not record a second action (by creating a step, “Play Action… “) , then chances are that the action being called has a Stop command that does not allow continuing. Make sure that all “stop” commands (in both actions) have “allow continue” selected, even if it’s the last “Stop” in the process. Otherwise all actions stop, including the one being recorded, and in turn no “Play Action… ” step is recorded.
