Photoshop: The Essential Photo Editing Tools

In digital imaging, Photoshop really has become all things to all people. In digital photography, it’s always been hard to find where photography stops and image manipulation begins, especially since you can do LOTS of image manipulation in traditional (film) photography as well.

That said though, the following is a list of what I consider to be the essential, basic photography tools in Photoshop:

  • File > Automate > Crop & Straighten Photo
  • File > Automate > Lens Correction
  • File > Automate > Merge To HDR Pro
  • File  > Automate > Photomerge
  • Image > Crop
  • Image > Adjustments > Brightness/Contrast *
  • Image > Adjustments > Levels*
  • Image > Adjustments > Curves*
  • Image > Adjustments > Exposure*
  • Image > Adjustments > Vibrance*
  • Image > Adjustments > Hue/Saturation*
  • Image > Adjustments > Color Balance*
  • Image > Adjustments > Black & White*
  • Image > Adjustments > Photo Filter*
  • Image > Adjustments > Channel Mixer*
  • Image > Adjustments > Shadow/Highlights
  • Image > Adjustments > HDR Toning
  • Filter > Lens Correction
  • Tools > Crop
  • Tools > Healing Brush / Spot Healing Brush
  • Tools > Dodge
  • Tools > Burn
  • Tools > Sponge
  • Bridge : Tools > Photoshop
  • Bridge : File > Open with Camera Raw
