Adobe Illustrator: Envelope Distort vs Warp Effect

There are two ways to access the Warp Options dialog box in Illustrator. You can apply your distortion either as an Effect through Effect > Warp, or you can apply your distortion as an Envelope Distort by going to Object > Envelope Distort > Make with Warp. The resulting appearance may be the same, in fact, you get the same warp options dialog box, but the way the distortion is applied is pretty different:

  • When using Effect > Warp, the distortion is applied as an effect. You can easily reset the numbers for the effect and get a new distortion. You can also stack effects by applying more warps on top of it.
  • When using Envelope Distort, the distortion is applied as an mesh (envelope). You can’t go back to the dialog box to change the settings, but you CAN directly edit the mesh as an object. You can also toggle between editing the mesh shape and the actual content.
