Of Bullets and Numbers: Tabs in a List

Lots of people have poo-poo’d tabs  as the default space setting character in a list, me included. But InDesign doesn’t really use the tab that often either… In the Bullets and Numbers Options box…

  • If you take out the tab character from the numbering style, the tab position is grayed out.
  • Within the Numbering Style, the tab has to be the last character.
  • When the First Line Indent is a negative value, you can only set up tabs between the First Line Indent and the Left Indent. The tab, however, is effectively useless, since it is set before where the type actually starts (blue highlight).
  • When the First Line Indent is positive value, you can set up tabs anywhere between 0p and 145p (green highlight).
  • The First Line Indent can only have a negative value up to the value of the Left Indent, otherwise the indent will be outside of the text frame.
