Fish Scales with Transform Effect and Adobe Illustrator

I currently have aspirations to draw a goldfish (we’ll see if I ever get a finished form somewhere) and I must say I really DO heart the Transform Effect in Illustrator. Here’s how to do a set of fish scales using just 1 circle and the transform effect. The post with the owl and the feather employ a similar concept. If you want the AI file, it’s here.

  1. Draw a circle.
  2. Apply Transform Effect to duplicate a column of scales
  3. Apply Transform Effect again to duplicate rows across
  4. Play with settings to offset the scales. Scale the, um, scales… smaller as you duplicate them, or apply rotate them to make it twist.
